BERKELEY -- In its first North Coast Section playoff appearance since 2009, the Pittsburg High boys basketball team showed some serious mettle.

Daniel Gonzales scored 21 points, including two crucial 3-pointers, and D.J. Kennedy added 19 as the No. 10 seeded Pirates rallied for a 74-69 overtime win over host Berkeley in their Division I opener on Tuesday.

Gonzales helped send the game to overtime when he drilled a 3-pointer from the left corner with 25 seconds left. The senior sharpshooter then connected on another long-range shot that tied the score at 66 with 2:15 to play in overtime after the No. 7 Yellowjackets opened with a 5-0 run.

"It's a tribute to our seniors," said Pittsburg coach Ryan Lloyd. "They've wanted this since the first day I got the job here. They committed to it and they showed it every play, they never gave up."

Pittsburg went ahead for good on Isaiah Patterson's jumper with just over a minute to go, and a heads-up play by Jeion Ritche -- diving for and securing a loose ball to force a Berkeley turnover with 37 seconds left -- helped cement the victory.

Asa Allen cut Pittsburg's lead to 70-69 with 20 seconds to play, but Armani Levias' layup and Gonzales' two free throws finished off Pittsburg's win.

The Pirates' reward for their thrilling upset? A quarterfinal matchup with No. 2 seed San Ramon Valley, Lloyd's alma mater, on Friday.

Berkeley (22-5), which played most of the second half and overtime without injured standout Adrian Rico, got a team-high 18 points from Casey Roquemore. Allen finished with 15 points, and Bryan Morris added 14.

The Yellowjackets held a slight lead for much of the second half, going ahead by as much as 48-40 in the third quarter.

But the surging Pirates (22-5), who ended the regular season on a seven-game winning streak to take second in the Bay Valley Athletic League, never went away.

It's been a special season for the team, which was coming off four consecutive losing seasons.

"(This win) means a lot to us, our community and our school," Lloyd said.
