BERKELEY -- Cal sophomore cornerback Stefan McClure, who suffered a major injury to his right knee Nov. 25 against Arizona State, is not as close to being ready to play as originally expected.

"He's not doing much right now and won't through most of camp," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. McClure had his anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments surgically repaired and also underwent mircofracture surgery to repair his meniscus.

"Microfracture surgery is a long (rehab)," Tedford said. "We have to make sure that heals properly."

Tedford conceded it's possible McClure could wind up redshirting this season.

"That's an injury you don't want to mess with," he said. "We will definitely err on the side of caution. He's a big-time player. He's got a future in this game to play at the next level."

A consensus top-10 cornerback prospect as a high school senior in Southern California, McClure played in 11 games as a freshman last fall, starting twice.

  • Tedford said linebacker Khairi Fortt, a transfer from Penn State, has no structural damage in his surgically repaired knee. He will begin practicing when rehab is complete and he has developed some fitness, probably in a couple weeks.

  • Redshirt freshman linebacker Jason Gibson broke his right foot in practice Monday and will be out for about three months. Tedford said Gibson has two or three fractures but probably won't need surgery.
