No. 1 Cal tied the rugby match with six minutes left on a try by Seamus Kelly and conversion by Jake Anderson before BYU's Jonny Linehan kicked a 17-meter drop goal at the end of injury time to win the Varsity Cup national title for the Cougars 27-24 on Saturday in Provo, Utah.

"They were a big, strong team with a great crowd behind them," Cal flanker Alec Gletzer said.

Kelly's try in the 74th minute tied it 24-24. Russell Webb and Jack O'Beirne had Cal's other tries.

  • Saint Mary's beat visiting Cal Poly 58-24 in the USA Rugby Division 1-A semifinals and will play Life in the final next Saturday in Greensboro, N.C. Tim Maupin (De la Salle High) broke through the Mustangs defense time and again, then off-loaded to Nick Wallace for two tries and Joey Reavey for one.

  • The No. 16 Stanford softball team (34-17, 11-9 Pac-12) routed No. 12 Cal 17-2 in five innings at Levine-Fricke Field. The 15-run win is the Cardinal's largest margin of victory over the Bears (35-14, 9-11). Kelsey Stevens (13-7) threw a one-hitter, allowing just Lindsey Ziegenhirt's two-run homer in the first. Fellow Stanford freshman Kayla Bonstrom had four hits, including a homer, four runs and four RBIs.

  • The Saint Mary's softball team (20-31, 11-13 PCSC) closed out its season by being swept at BYU -- 7-6 and 4-1. In the opener, Katelyn Mamizuka (Monte Vista High) hit a solo homer to start the Gaels' five-run seventh. BYU rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars' Tori Almond pitched a no-hitter in the finale.

  • The San Jose State softball team (39-15, 17-4) won 2-1 in eight innings and 5-2 over New Mexico State (35-17, 16-4) to win the WAC regular-season title.

  • The Cal baseball team (21-25, 9-14 Pac-12) was limited to two hits by Andrew Moore -- singles by Devin Pearson and Mitchell Kranson (De La Salle High) -- falling 5-0 at No. 5 Oregon State (36-8, 16-4).

  • The Saint Mary's baseball team (17-29, 8-9 WCC) lost 6-3 to visiting San Diego (28-17, 12-8). Brenden Kalfus homered to give the Gaels a 2-0 lead in the first inning. It extended his hitting streak to 28 games. Tied 2-2 in the eighth, USD took advantage of four hit batsmen to score twice.

  • Gonzaga (30-14-1, 17-6) clinched the WCC regular season baseball title with a 6-1 victory at Santa Clara (10-34, 0-20).

  • The Cal women's rowing team beat Stanford in the varsity eight race to retain the Lambert Cup at Redwood Shores. For just the second time in the last 23 years, Stanford beat Cal in the men's varsity eight to win the Schwabacher Cup.

  • Saint Mary's Dalas Dodd and Jordan Shaw beat UCLA (21-13, 21-12) and Loyola Marymount (21-17, 21-18) and are one of 16 pairs to play for the AVCA Sand Volleyball title Sunday in Gulf Shores, Ala.

  • The Stanford women's lacrosse team claimed the MPSF title, beating Denver 7-6 in Eugene, Ore. Rachel Ozer (Campolindo High) had a goal for Stanford.

    Horse racing

    Jockey Russell Baze swept races five through seven at Golden Gate Fields with Lord's Minister, Mickey Ball and Olympic Blue. He won four races Friday.
