San Jose State's David Fales and Fresno State's Derek Carr both threw touchdown passes in the South's 20-10 win over the North in the Senior Bowl on Saturday in Mobile, Ala.

Fales entered with 10:16 left in the second quarter and hit Colorado State's Crockett Gillmore for a 23-yard gain on his first pass attempt. After three straight running plays, Fales and Alabama's Kevin Norwood connected on a 24-yard touchdown.

Fales finished 6 of 7 for 104 yards and one interception. Carr went 7 of 12 for 45 yards.

  • Cal lost a top football recruit when Koa Farmer, a four-star safety/linebacker from Notre Dame High-Sherman Oaks, announced via Instagram that he has flipped to Penn State. Oral commitments aren't binding. Signing day is Feb. 5.

  • Cal's No. 1 women's swimming and diving team closed out its home season with a 190-109 rout of No. 10 Arizona before more than 1,500 fans at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Bears freshman Missy Franklin won the 100- and 500-yard freestyle events and 100 backstroke. The Olympic gold medalist took the 200 and 500 freestyles and 200 backstroke against Arizona State on Friday.

    Stanford beat Arizona State 148-68 behind two wins each by Felicia Lee (200 IM, 100 freestyle) and diver Stephanie Phipps at the Avery Aquatic Center.

    Jeremy Bagshaw, Marcin Tarczynski, Seth Stubblefield and Ryan Murphy won two events each as the No. 4 Cal men's team (5-0) routed No. 5 Arizona 206-92. Stanford (5-0, 2-0 Pac-12) beat Arizona State 135-101 behind two wins each by Thomas Stephens (100 and 200 freestyles) and Max Williamson (200 IM, 200 breaststroke).

  • The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team (6-0) beat Long Beach State 13-6 and UC Santa Barbara 14-4 to finish the UC Santa Barbara Invitational at 4-0.

  • The No. 8 Cal women's tennis team routed Washington 4-0 at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Berkeley. Maegan Manasse clinched it with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Natalie Coronel.

    In men's ITA Kick-Off Weekend matches, Filip Bergevi beat Frances Alcantara 6-4, 6-5 (7-5) to clinch No. 16 Cal's 4-2 win over host Pepperdine.

    Soccer

    The Earthquakes signed defenders Brandon Barklage and Shaun Francis, who were selected in the MLS re-entry draft last month. San Jose also signed Bryan Meredith as its third goalkeeper.

  • Former Stanford star Kelley O'Hara has returned to the U.S. women's team after a serious ankle injury sidelined her in the fall. O'Hara is one of four Bay Area players named to a 24-player roster for a three-week trip that opens Jan. 31 against Canada. Nicole Barnhart (Stanford alum), Christen Press (Stanford) and Julie Johnston (Santa Clara) also were named to the team.

    Horse racing

    Scherzinger captured the $200,000 Santa Monica Stakes by a length under jockey Mike Smith at Santa Anita.
