Mark Marquess will look to become the seventh baseball coach in NCAA history to reach 1,500 victories when Stanford opens a three-game series at Vanderbilt on Friday.

Marquess sits at 1,499 career victories entering the Cardinal's weekend road trip. It will be a difficult task for Stanford (4-4) as Vanderbilt (8-2) comes in as a consensus top-10 team.

  • Cal's Missy Franklin won the 500-yard freestyle in a Pac-12 record 4 minutes, 35.73 seconds on the second day of the conference women's swimming and diving championships in Federal Way, Wash.

    Stanford's Maya DiRado took the 200 individual medley in 1:54.67, edging Cal's Celina Li (1:54.89). USC's Kasey Carlson, who went to Las Lomas High, won the 50 freestyle in 21.74 seconds, and Stanford's Stephanie Phipps took the 1-meter diving.

    Cal was DQ in the last race of the night -- the 200 free relay. The Bears touched the wall first, edging Arizona by .05 seconds. But officials ruled Cal left the blocks early on one of the exchanges.

    Stanford leads with 507 points, followed by USC (448) and Cal (400.5).

  • Saint Mary's Danielle Flores beat Brynn Boren 6-4, 7-6 at No. 2 singles, but the Gaels (3-5) lost at No. 6 USC 6-1 in women's tennis.

    Horse racing

    Pepper Crown, ridden by Juan Hernandez, posted a front-running win in the $43,400 McCann's Mojave at Golden Gate Fields. The 4-year-old colt beat stretch-running Mobilized by a length. Pepper Crown ($8) ran 11/16 miles in 1:47.06. Bred, trained and owned by Alex Paszkeicz, Pepper Crown earned $27,300 for the victory and has three wins in seven starts.
