Here are some facts about the Pacific bluefin tuna.

Scientific name: Thunnus orientalis

Diet: Feeds on small fish, squid and crab.

Dinner: Bluefin is popular for sushi and sashimi.

Big fish: These streamlined fish may live up to 26 years, grow up to 10 feet long and weigh more than 1,000 pounds.

Travels: Bluefin breed in the waters around Japan. Most are thought to migrate eastward late in their first year or early in their second. However, they may migrate at older ages. Eventually, the fish swim back west to spawn. Scientists estimate their cross-Pacific journey takes about two months.

Lingering questions: Scientists aren't clear what triggers the bluefin's grand migrations or how many fish of different ages move every year.
