SANTA CRUZ - Nat Young's title defense at the O'Neill Cold Water Classic ended in his first heat Tuesday when the Santa Cruz 18-year-old was bounced from the Round of 96.

Young, who was the surprise winner of last year's contest at Steamer Lane, caught seven waves for 9.27 points to finished fourth behind Granger Larsen (13.00), Nathaniel Curran (10.33) and fellow Santa Cruzan Noi Kalukukui (9.77). The top two finishers in each heat advance.

Young, who earned the title "Pride of the Westside" after his thrilling victory last year, was the crowd favorite surfing at his home break. He will still surf in the Oakley Pro Junior contest that runs in conjunction with the Cold Water.
