A locksmith from Van Nuys who allegedly posed as a Coca-Cola Co. representative to steal money from Southland vending machines was in custody on Thursday, police said.

Jay Ybarra, 38, allegedly went to a business in the 6500 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard Oct. 13 wearing a baseball cap and jacket with Coke logos, police said.

"Without raising suspicions because of his appearance, he proceeded to open a vending machine with a key and transfer money from the machine into a bag," police said. "Afterward, the suspect secured the machine and left in his van."

LAPD detectives worked with a Coca-Cola field security manager on the investigation.

"On Oct. 30, the suspect abruptly left when he was questioned by business personnel at a location where was attempting to access a vending machine," police said. "Those who questioned him also provided details to police that led to his arrest."

Ybarra was arrested Monday and held on $120,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in Van Nuys Superior Court on Nov. 12.
