OROVILLE — With Butte County seeing an unprecedented number of voters turning in their vote-by-mail ballots at the polls Tuesday, several close races could remain undetermined until Thanksgiving.

The two races that will likely be most affected by the continued vote count are the Chico City Council and Oroville City Council races.

In the race for the third Chico council seat up for grabs, conservative challenger Bob Evans trails incumbent Mary Flynn by just 61 votes. Mark Sorensen is the clear leader and Scott Gruendl has clinched second place thus far.

In Oroville, the margin between the first place candidate, Jack Berry, and fourth place candidate, Dan Gordon, is 126 votes. Barbara Cheri Bunker and Gordon Andoe are in second and third places, respectively, and are separated by 22 votes.

There were three open seats on the Oroville council.

Butte County Clerk-Recorder Candace Grubbs said she hopes to have the votes tallied by Thanksgiving, but does have until Nov. 30 to complete the count.
