LOS ANGELES - After an unseasonably cool winter and early spring, temperatures are on the upswing around the Southland, with highs expected in the mid-80s in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys today and rising to the low 90s on Thursday, the National Weather Service reported.

The NWS forecasts temperatures to hit the lower 80s today in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The sudden heat wave -- which follows months of rainy and cold weather -- will be brief, however.

The NWS said things will cool off again by the weekend, when north winds are predicted across parts of the area, with gusts reaching 30 mph.
