ANAHEIM - The Orange County coroner today identified a 53-year- old Buena Park woman killed by a wrong way motorist who drove eastbound in the westbound Riverside (91) Freeway in Anaheim, colliding head-on with the car in which she was a passenger.
Kyung Namgoong was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where she was pronounced dead at 2:52 a.m. Sunday, the coroner said.
She was riding in a white Toyota Camry with a 58-year-old man who suffered minor injuries, according to the investigating officer.
A wrong-way driver in a blue Honda Civic headed east on the westbound Riverside (91) Freeway and crashed head-on into a car coming the opposite way early Sunday.
Power tools were used to crack open the wrecked vehicles and remove four people, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Marc Stone.
CHP officers said the 23-year-old man was spotted driving north in the southbound lanes of the Route 241 Toll Road, approaching the Riverside (91) Freeway interchange. The wrong-way motorist transitioned onto the eastbound 91, going west.
The car came to a grinding stop in the collision, west of Coal Canyon, at about 1:47 a.m., the CHP said.
The wrong-way driver reportedly suffered major injuries and was determined to be under the influence of alcohol, investigating Officer S. Woodward said. The 24-year-woman with him suffered minor injuries.
The eastbound 91 was closed for several hours for the investigation.
