LAUSD will refile every case of teacher misconduct over the last three years with the state credentialing commission to ensure that nobody slipped through the cracks, Superintendent John Deasy said Wednesday.
During a 45-minute interview on KPCC-FM, Deasy said he wanted to be sure there was no lapse like the one that occurred when Los Angeles Unified waited a year before notifying the state that it was firing Mark Berndt, the Miramonte Elementary teacher suspected of committing lewd acts with students.
"I ordered my staff to re-file every single report over the last three academic years and this year, just as an abundance of caution, and to be quite clear that every case was sent to the commission," Deasy said.
Berndt was fired in February 2011 after officials learned the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department was investigating him for suspected sex abuse.
Berndt was arrested Jan. 30, 2012, and charged the next day with 23 counts of committing lewd acts against children. At that point, the school district notified the CTC, which immediately suspended Berndt's credential.
KPCC reported last Thursday that the Commission on Teacher Credentialing had sent Deasy a letter warning that the district was posing a "potential risk to student safety" by not providing a timely report on accused teachers.
A day later, Deasy issued a statement conceding that the district broke state law by waiting a year to report Berndt. He also
District officials could not immediately say how many cases had been filed over the last three years, or how the review was being handled.
The state commission did not immediately return phone calls.
During the same radio interview, Deasy said he would not "leave any stone unturned" in rooting out problem teacher.
He noted that more than 850 certificated employees had been "separated" from Los Angeles Unified in the 10 months since he took over as superintendent - not only for criminal activity but for failing to meet "standards of conduct."
"If you do something wrong," he said, "you will be fired."
