SOMERSET, Calif.—Fire officials are crediting the efforts of homeowners in creating so-called defensible space for saving some of their homes from a brushfire in rural El Dorado County Tuesday.

CalFire spokesman Daniel Berlant says 25 homes near the community of Somerset were in the path of the fire that burned up to the edge of some of the homes.

No homes were damaged in the fire that consumed 15 acres, but some residents evacuated as the flames moved closer.

Berlant says the initial rapid advancement of the blaze was fueled by dry brush, low humidity and high temperatures.

By late Tuesday, the fire was 50 percent contained. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Somerset is a tiny community about 50 miles east of Sacramento.
