LOS ANGELES - The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County recorded its largest daily increase since May 12 today, rising 5.8 cents to $4.259 -- its highest amount since June 1.

The average price has increased by more than 1 cent on each of the past five days and is 11.6 cents more than a week ago, 8.6 cents higher than a month ago and 41.8 cents greater than at this time last year, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.

The Orange County average price also recorded its largest daily increase since May 12, rising 5.9 cents to $4.236, its highest amount since May 31. It has also risen by more than 1 cent for five consecutive days and is 12.4 cents more than one week ago, 8.1 cents higher than one month ago and 42.6 cents greater than one year ago.

The increases since Monday are the result of a power failure at the Torrance ExxonMobil refinery which may cause it to flare gases for a week, reducing the supply, Marie Montgomery Nordhues of the Automobile Club of Southern California told City News Service.
