SANTA CRUZ -- A 59-year-old Aptos man died while awaiting processing at Santa Cruz County Jail on Saturday morning, jail officials said.
Rick Prichard was arrested by the California Highway Patrol earlier Saturday and was brought to the jail, Lt. Jeremy Verinsky said.
Prichard was waiting at the jail when he suffered some sort of medical emergency. Correctional staff and on-site medical staff began resuscitation efforts immediately and called fire officials and paramedics.
The Coroner's Office is investigating the cause of death and an autopsy is expected to be performed later this week, Verinsky said.
Prichard had been pulled over in the early morning hours Saturday for suspicion of driving under the influence in the area of Seascape Boulevard, California Highway Patrol officer Sarah Jackson said.
Prichard's family members said his brother was at the jail to pick him up when he died.
They described Prichard as a good man, a devoted husband and dedicated father of three young children.
No further information was immediately available Monday.
Prichard's death was the second to occur at the County Jail in recent months.
