The state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is conducting a controlled burn on Old Stage Road at Crazy Horse Road that began at 10 a.m. today.

Smoke from the 1,000-acre burn is expected to be visible from the Salinas Valley, Monterey Peninsula, North County, San Juan Bautista and Hollister, Cal Fire officials said.

Two helicopters, 16 fire engines, two bulldozers and four handcrews would be on hand to control the blaze, firefighters said.
