SANTA CRUZ - A woman in her early 20s was struck by a Ford Explorer while she was riding a mountain bike south on Almar Avenue about 6 p.m. Wednesday, police reported.

Police said the woman, who was not wearing a helmet, had failed to stop at Delaware Avenue when the collision with the Ford Explorer occurred.

The vehicle dragged the woman about 50 feet, police Lt. Larry Richard said.

The woman was flown to a trauma center outside of Santa Cruz County with severe injuries, Richard said.

The 75-year-old driver of the Ford, who was eastbound on Delaware, was not cited.

Police closed Delaware between Almar and Seaside Street for about four hours while the accident was investigated.
