U-T San Diego ( http://bit.ly/YN12yR) says the F/A-18 jet was training with the aircraft carrier Nimitz on Tuesday night when it was diverted. It landed safely at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego.
Navy Lt. Aaron Kakiel says he can't comment on why the jet was diverted from the aircraft carrier. He says jets occasionally are prevented from returning to ship by a variety of problems, including mechanical problems.
Four years ago, a malfunctioning Marine F/A-18D crashed into a San Diego home after the pilot ejected. Four people died. A military investigation concluded that the pilot and ground crews didn't follow emergency landing rules.
