LONG BEACH -- A Long Beach Fire Department paramedic was injured early Thursday when the rig he was riding in collided with a catering truck, police said.

The incident occurred at about 7:22 a.m. when the paramedic unit was transporting a patient to a local hospital, said Sgt. Aaron Eaton, a Long Beach Police Department spokesman.

Paramedics were heading south on Atlantic Avenue with their lights and siren going when they crossed Anaheim Street and collided with the truck, which was heading east on Anaheim, Eaton said.

The paramedic suffered non-life-threatening injuries and he and the original patient were both taken to the hospital for treatment, Eaton said.

The accident remains under investigation.
