The charges against Francisco Gamez II, 41, came a day after he was arrested by Los Angeles police in the death of 38-year-old Armando Casillas.
Gamez also is charged with attempted murder; prosecutors say he fired at a second man, who was not hit.
Gamez's son called him from Beaver Street, where he was involved in an altercation with Casillas, prosecutors said.
According to a statement from the District Attorney's Office, Gamez showed up about 11 p.m., confronted Casillas and another man, then fired two shots. He is accused of firing from his car.
Gamez, who was held on $4 million bail, was expected to appear in court this afternoon.
He is a 17-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department and had worked out of the West Hollywood station since 2005 until he was put on leave this summer pending the outcome of this investigation.
