SANTA ANA, Calif.—A former chairman of the California Republican Party has been arrested for investigation of drunken driving.

The California Highway Patrol says Michael Schroeder—a political adviser to the Orange County's district attorney—was arrested earlier this month in Orange County after his Porsche was spotted crossing lanes.

The Orange County Register reported Thursday ( that a CHP report says Schroeder had slurred speech and failed a sobriety test after being stopped at 3:20 a.m. on Nov. 1.

Blood-test results are pending.

He was cited and released.

The case was referred to the state because of Schroeder's ties to the local prosecutor—his wife is the district attorney's chief of staff.

Schroeder attorney Al Stokke tells the newspaper the 56-year-old former GOP chief will "deal with it responsibly."
