OAKLAND, Calif.—Authorities say an employee at an Oakland recycling company was killed when the forklift he was operating fell on him.

State health and safety officials say the fatal accident occurred at 9:43 a.m. Thursday at Super Link Plastic Inc. in Oakland. The name of the 34-year-old victim has not been released.

Cal/OSHA spokeswoman Erika Monterroza says the worker was using a forklift to raise another forklift when the machine he was operating toppled over, pinning or crushing his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Company vice president Matty Chao told the San Francisco Chronicle ( http://bit.ly/SZc2US) that it's a "very sad atmosphere right now" and declined to comment further.

State investigators have barred the company's employees from operating forklifts until officials make sure workers have proper training.
