LONG BEACH - Excessive speed and rain-slickened roads were blamed for a Saturday night traffic accident that claimed the life of a truck driver and one of two passengers, police said.
The driver of the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 truck was identified as Mark Martineau, 36 of Seal Beach. The rear-seat passenger was identified as Richard McAleavey, 54, of Long Beach.
Both men died at the scene of the 6:22 p.m. accident on Redondo Avenue at the San Diego (405) Freeway, said Sgt. Aaron Eaton, a spokesman with the Long Beach Police Department.
The front-seat passenger, Terrence Harris, 36, of Long Beach, was listed in critical condition at an area hospital, Eaton said.
McAleavey was not wearing a seat belt, but police didn't know if Martineau was wearing one.
Police said Martineau was driving north on Redondo Avenue in the No. 1 lane when he lost control of the truck while making a lane change. The truck hydroplaned, causing it to spin onto a sidewalk, where it struck a concrete support pillar of the freeway overpass.
Anyone with information about the accident was asked to contact Long Beach Police accident investigations Detective Richard Birdsall at 562-570-7355.
