LONG BEACH -- Long Beach Police Department Gang Enforcement detectives are investigating a late night shooting in Central Long Beach that left a 29-year-old man seriously injured, authorities said Wednesday.

The incident was reported at about 10:09 p.m. Tuesday, when police were called to the area of New York Street and Cerritos Avenue after shots were fired, said Marlene Arrona , a Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman.

The preliminary investigation found the victim was riding a bicycle when the suspect, described as a male black in his 20s, drove by in a dark, compact car and opened fire, Arrona said.

The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed by paramedics to a local hospital, where he underwent surgery late Tuesday. He is expected to survive, the spokeswoman noted.

His name was withheld because he is the victim of a violent crime.

The motive for the shooting remains unknown, but the attack is being investigated by the Gang Enforcement section, Arrona said.
