BOULDER CREEK -- Valley Churches United Missions will hold its 18th annual "Angels of the Year" awards dinner Thursday to honor individuals, volunteers and others for helping San Lorenzo Valley residents during their times of need.

The event, held at Scopazzi's restaurant in Boulder Creek, will include an awards ceremony in addition to a raffle and silent and live auctions.

"Their contributions ensure that area residents during their time of need receive direct aid assistance in the form of emergency food, crisis rent, utility help, holiday projects food and gifts, educational assistance for children and disaster relief, before during and after," the organization wrote in a press release.

The following awards will be distributed:

  • Individuals of the Year: Sheri Greene and Andres Villa, for their work in the food pantry, food bag assembly, administration, delivery, computer work, food distribution, holiday projects, disaster center, building repair and maintenance.

  • Businesses of the Year: Andy Kinder, for his window washing and maintenance help, as well as financial contributions and assistance with the Holiday Project events; Masood's Liquor & Deli, whose cash canister has collected more than $7,000 for the pantry and holiday projects.

  • Church of the Year: Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, which provided volunteers for various improvement projects.

  • Holiday Event Organizers: Century 21 Showcase in Scotts Valley, which hosted a food drive in 2010, bringing in $6,701 in contributions.

  • School of the Year Event: Winter Carnival at San Lorenzo Valley Middle School, which has brought in $33,806 to Valley Churches' Christmas Project since 1990.

  • Organizations of the Year: Dan Kelly of Boulder Creek Men's Golf, who organized the Alvin Scarborough Memorial Golf Tournament to raise funds; and John Jay of the Family Giving Tree Milpitas Rotary Clubs, who has brought in backpacks and holiday gifts, Celeste Delamore, who has channeled various donations.

  • Media of the Year: Rosemary Chalmers of KSCO Radio, who has helped bring in year-round donations and communicated disaster center warnings.

  • Memorial Recognitions: Ted Grace (2009-2012); Bob Morgan (1989-2007); Susan Thieman (1987-2012).

  • Special Memorial Recognitions: Alvin Scarborough and JoAnn Park.
