OAKLAND -- Four people were being detained by Oakland police Saturday night in connection with a string of street robberies in the Lake Merritt area.

Oakland police said that about 9 p.m. investigators tracked the four people, whose names were not immediately released, to a home near Lake Merritt and, one by one, removed them from the house and detained them.

The four suspects are believed to be connected to multiple street robberies that have occurred recently, police said.

Items taken have included wallets and, even more often, phones.

Police encourage residents to use screen locks and passwords to unlock their phones and to not get distracted playing games or listening to music.

The screen locks are free and are extra barrier to thieves who want your information, police said.

Though the four people detained have not been arrested, police said the investigation was still in the early stages.
