SCOTTS VALLEY -- City leaders will discuss creating the city's first performing arts center next to the library at Wednesday's City Council meeting, following a consensus derived from a series of public meetings in the last few months.
The last meeting on how best to use the 9,000-square-foot space, which was previously a roller skating rink, was held in late October, when residents broke into groups to brainstorm and sketch out ideas. Since the performing arts community no longer has use of the theater on the former Bethany University campus, residents involved in talks over the last six months agree, the city would be best served by creating a performing arts venue. But it also would include areas for meetings and special events.
At Wednesday's meeting, a representative from Group 4 Architecture, Research + Planning, the San Francisco-based firm that designed the library, will talk about the results of the workshops, and the issue will be open for public discussion before the City Council decides how to bring the idea from concept to reality. But the city has no money set aside for the renovation, staff say, meaning funds must be raised through community fundraising efforts and grants.
In other business, applications for funding from the county's Regional Surface Transportation Program are due next week, and the council will discuss which projects should take priority. The following is a list of projects that could receive funding:
Those projects total $2.2 million, but City Manager Steve Ando said the city plans to apply for about $1 million of the $5 million in available funds. The program requires an 11.5 percent match from the city, and officials will dip into its gas tax funds to cover that amount, according to a staff report.
However, the county is responsible for repairs to Vine Hill Road, which was washed out during the recent storms, since it lies outside the city's limits. Nelson Road, which also falls under the county's jurisdiction, was damaged during last spring's storms and is closed.
