EL CAJON, Calif.—A homicide investigator says a man who was shot by California Highway Patrol officers he confronted in San Diego County may have been suicidal.

Twenty-seven-year-old Anthony Osorio of Crest died Sunday after CHP officers chased his speeding pickup on Interstate 8 in El Cajon.

Authorities says patrol car video showed Osorio being hit 18 times in three seconds after he yelled profanities at officers, lunged at them and pretended to be pulling a gun from behind his back. He was unarmed.

Sheriff's homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio says a witness reported Osorio talked earlier about committing suicide by having police shoot him.

Osorio's father, Ted, tells U-T San Diego (http://bit.ly/R91OWz) that Osorio was devastated by the September suicide of his younger brother and would never have killed himself.
