A pedestrian was struck by a car and killed early Tuesday morning as he crossed the street in Van Nuys.
The accident happened about 4:50 a.m. near the intersection of Vanowen Street and Noble Avenue, right next to Valley Presbyterian Hospital.
Los Angeles police detectives were still investigating later this morning, but apparently the man was in a crosswalk, Officer Brandon Jeon of the Valley Traffic Division said.
The driver did not appear to be impaired and simply didn't see the pedestrian, Jeon said.
The victim's identity was not yet available, but Jeon said he appeared to be an older man.
The accident came a day after Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced the city will install 53 new crosswalks at busy intersections in the next three months in an effort to cut pedestrian fatalities and injuries.
