LONG BEACH — Jordan High School this week was mourning the loss of a 15-year-old football player who collapsed while running during practice and later died in the hospital.
Temoc Castellanos, a 10 th-grader, collapsed without warning while running on the track during football practice at about 2 p.m. on Dec. 11, said Long Beach Unified School District spokesman Chris Eftychiou.
Castellanos apparently went into cardiac arrest and school staff performed CPR until paramedics arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital.
The teen died while in the hospital on the evening of Dec. 14.
"The Jordan community is deeply saddened by this loss, and our thoughts are with Temoc's family," Eftychiou wrote in an email. "We have provided counselors at Jordan for students as needed."
A family friend told Belmont Shore Patch that Castellanos suffered from an undiagnosed heart defect. The teen was reportedly on the principal's honor roll at Jordan and had earned the U.S. Boy Scouts of America achievement of Life Scout.
