Highway 1 is shut down at Partington Ridge Road, seven miles south of Big Sur, after crews cleared another rock slide in San Luis Obisbo County on the highway, officials say.

The slide happened about 5 p.m. Sunday as a pelting storm hit the Central Coast.

The highway is closed at Partington Ridge Road (mile marker 39) and at Lucia (mile marker 23), Caltrans officials said at noon Monday.

A third slide south of Gorda near Ragged Point (mile marker 7) has been cleared.

There is no estimated time for reopening, as crews are working to assess the damage and begin cleanup, Caltrans said.

Businesses in the Big Sur community remain open. Alternate routes for motorists are Highways 68, 101, 46 and Nacimiento-Fergusson Road, Caltrans said.

Message signs have been activated to advise motorists.
