REDLANDS -- Toy and food drives put together for families in need are usually the front-runners during the holidays.

There are other needs, however, and students at the University of Redlands - specifically the School of Business - addressed an important one by gathering hygiene items over the last month or so.

On Friday, well more than 1,200 items - shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, floss, toothbrushes, deodorant, body wash, soap, shavers and other various hygiene items - were delivered to the Family Services Association of Redlands.

"I thought it would be positive because of our previous food drives," said Jennifer Guzman, one of the students involved in the hygiene drive and a campus service associate at the school. "The students have been very responsive. I expected it to go well but this is just amazing."

Hygiene items are usually overlooked when holiday drives are organized.

"I think people tend to think more about toys around the holidays," Guzman said.

The past two years the university has partnered with Family Service Association of Redlands for food drives. In 2010 and 2011 those food drives produced more than 1,000 pounds of donated food.
