PITTSBURG -- An 18-year-old Richmond man shot and critically wounded Thursday night in the parking lot of a BART station is out of surgery, police said.

The victim was apparently shot in the chest and the elbow while in his car, a white Toyota Camry. An altercation led to the shooting, shortly before 7 p.m. in the parking lot at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station, according to BART police Deputy Chief Ben Fairow.

The man's wounds were described Thursday night as life-threatening. Fairow said Friday morning that his condition, while still critical, appeared to be improving.

The shooter apparently fired at the victim's car from inside a black Nissan Maxima, possibly a 1990s-era model, with tinted windows, a rear spoiler, and an inoperative left tail light, Fairow said. The suspect car fled in an unknown direction.

Anyone with any information about the shooting is asked to call BART police at 510-464-7011.
