LONG BEACH — A 62-year-old man and his two cats were found dead after a late-night fire Saturday in an East Long Beach home, authorities said.
The fire was reported at 11:36 p.m. Saturday in the 5400 block of Peabody Street, said Will Nash, spokesman for the Long Beach Fire Department.
"It (the fire) was well-involved when the first unit arrived four minutes later," Nash said.
Firefighters were able to knock down the blaze shortly after arriving at the scene.
The 62-year-old man was found in the living room area and pronounced dead at the scene, Nash said. The victim's identity wasn't released.
It was unclear why the man didn't get out of the home, although it was believed he was somewhat disabled, the spokesman said.
It appeared the fire started in the kitchen, although the exact cause was under investigation, Nash said. It appeared there were no smoke detectors inside the home, he said.
