SANTA CRUZ -- An exhibit of small, reasonably priced art proved popular this year at the 93-year-old Santa Cruz Art League, and organizers say the Small Wonders event will be an annual holiday season offering.

Small Wonders II (the first was last year) is an exhibit of art from more than 80 county residents that began Dec. 15 and ends Sunday. The artworks are limited to pieces 14 inches or smaller and the exhibit is open to league members and other county artists.

The exhibit is designed to appeal to holiday shoppers and purchased pieces are removed and then replaced with another work of art by the same artist, said Keelin Sabel, an assistant director at the league.

"It's popular, it's been great," Sabel said. "They are small and nicely priced and it's in-process, it changes as it goes along. "

The variety displayed in the gallery of the nonprofit league on Broadway near Ocean Street seems nearly unlimited, with paintings in several media, as well as collages, sculpture, pastels, encaustic, fabric art, etchings, drawings, photography, ceramics, basketry and more.

One artist touring the exhibit with her family said she was impressed by the breadth of the selections.

"It's a nice selection," Stephanie Dobson said. "There are some talented people in this community."

Another woman viewing the exhibit, who lives in Soquel, and who didn't want to give her full name, said she loved coming down to the league.

"I forget about it, but it's a very nice little space," she said. "There are some excellent pieces here."

Prices range from $40 to $325, with most of the art in the exhibit priced close to $100.

The Santa Cruz Art League includes an art gallery, theater, classroom and gift shop. It was founded in 1919 and the building was constructed in 1951.

The league also offers classes and workshops, which include traditional drawing and painting classes and offerings like a Valentine's Jewelry class with COPPR clay on Feb. 2 and 9 and a journaling class on June 1-2.

Next up in the art gallery, is an exhibit of league members' art called Local Essence.

The work of artists whose last names start with L-Z begins Jan. 12 and ends Feb. 3. A reception will be 3-5 p.m. Jan. 19.

The work of artists whose last names start with A-K begins Feb. 9 and ends March 3. A reception will be 3-5 p.m. Feb. 16.
