LOS ANGELES—Officials say two Los Angeles County sheriff's captains have retired after one was caught funneling information to an alleged Comptom drug trafficker, the other accused of protecting brutal jailers.

Spokesman Steve Whitmore tells the Los Angeles Times ( http://lat.ms/YTurob) Wednesday that Bernice Abram and Daniel Cruz both performed admirably.

Investigators say they heard Abram alert gang member Dion Grim to planned sheriff's operations in the area on a federal wiretap.

Prosecutors decided not to file charges, saying they couldn't prove she knew he was involved in illegal activities. Abram has mostly declined comment to the Times.

Cruz was a former captain at the Men's Central Jail, where officials said an aggressive clique of gang-like deputies used excessive force against inmates.

Cruz denied allegations to the Times but declined to give specifics.
