MONTEREY -- A Monterey County Superior Court judge on Wednesday sentenced a former state prison guard to six years for smuggling drugs and cellular phones to inmates for money, according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.

Judge Pamela Butler imposed the sentence against Jose Fuentes after convicting him of committing bribery while he served as a correctional officer at the Correctional Training Facility State Prison at Soledad, according to District Attorney Dean D. Flippo.

The district attorney's office has accused Fuentes, 31, of smuggling drugs and cell phones "systematically" over a two-year period at a profit, Flippo said.

Butler declined Fuentes' request for probation and sent him to prison for six years because "he violated his position of authority and trust as a sworn officer and public employee," Flippo said in a statement.
