LAKEWOOD - Two days after a man was shot and killed and five others wounded in Lakewood at a New Year's Eve gathering, the working-class neighborhood was quiet Wednesday.

According to the Sheriff's Department, a small group of people were standing in the driveway in the 20700 block of Alburtis Avenue when they were approached by a man about 11:20 p.m. Monday.

Words were exchanged, which lead to an argument and gunshots, deputies said.

A 36-year-old victim who was shot in the upper torso was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police had yet to release his identity Wednesday.

The other victims - one woman and four men - suffered minor, non-life threatening gunshot wounds, deputies said.

According to witnesses, the suspect, described only as a Hispanic man, fled on foot.

Residents of the neighborhood just east of the 605 Freeway and south of Del Amo Boulevard declined to comment Wednesday on the shooting. An investigation is ongoing, deputies said.
