The suspect, described by Long Beach police as man in his 20s, pulled a gun on the man in the 500 block of Chestnut Avenue at around 5 a.m., Long Beach police spokeswoman Nancy Pratt said.
Officers lost sight of the suspect after a short pursuit, then called for SWAT backup, Pratt said. Several blocks were sealed off between 4th Street and 7th Street, and the suspect surrendered about an hour later, according to Pratt.
A handgun was recovered by police, she said. The victim, taken to an area where the suspect was being detained, identified the man as the person who had taken her purse, Fox11 reported. The victim was not injured in the incident.
The suspect's name and booking charges were not immediately available.
