SANTA ANA, Calif.—Santa Ana police have shot and wounded a man they say refused orders to drop a handgun.

A report of a man with a gun sent officers to a home on Morningside Avenue at around 1:45 a.m.

Police say a 43-year-old man carrying a handgun came out of a garage and was shot in the upper body when he refused to drop it.

He was taken to a hospital for surgery but there's no immediate word on his condition.

No officers were hurt.
