An elderly woman was struck and killed by a vehicle early Saturday while crossing the street at Palo Verde Avenue and Belen Street at about 5:40 a.m., according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The woman was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after, said Nancy Pratt, spokesperson for the LBPD.

Investigators said a 2006 Chevy Tahoe was driving south on Palo Verde when it hit the woman as she was crossing westbound at the intersection. She was crossing at the north end of the intersection, where no crossing is posted, police said. The driver of the Tahoe was identified as a 31-year-old Long Beach resident who remained at the scene, was interviewed by officers and then released.

The woman, in her 70s or 80s, was not carrying identification and for now is listed as Jane Doe.
