VISTA, Calif.—A retired Newport Beach policewoman has been sentenced to nine years in prison for a drunken-driving crash that killed one person and injured three in San Diego County.

U-T San Diego reports (http://bit.ly/WKKd2I) 51-year-old Katherine Ann Heinzel of Winchester cried on Friday when a judge denied a recommendation to place her on probation.

Heinzel was arrested November 2011 on Interstate 15 in Fallbrook after she rear-ended a car. Both cars went through a guardrail and down a 352-foot hill.

The other driver, 20-year-old Davieonne Kelly of Perris, died at the scene. Two of his passengers and Heinzel were hurt.

Heinzel investigated traffic collisions, including drunken driving collisions, when she was a Newport Beach police officer from 1986 to 1994.

She was a private investigator at the time of the crash.
