LONG BEACH — The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office identified a bicyclist who was killed in a traffic accident late Tuesday night as 50-year-old Susan E. Curtis, Assistant Chief Ed Winter said Thursday.
The Long Beach woman died shortly after being hit in the Bellflower Boulevard and Atherton Street intersection, after riding through a red traffic signal, authorities said.
The driver, a 19-year-old Los Alamitos man, was not cited.
Curtis often rode her bicycle to work and considered it her primary form of transportation, said Melissa Knievel-Natanson, co-owner of Up, Up and Away, a Seal Beach kite shop where Curtis worked for more than seven years.
Curtis, an animal lover who lived alone and worked two part-time jobs, also worked as a pet sitter and dog walker, Knievel-Natanson said. She added that Curtis owned a menagerie of pets, including one dog and six cats.
"Her life was her animals," Knievel-Natanson said, adding that Curtis often worked to find homes for pets.
