Rialto Unified School District board member Joanne T. Gilbert has pulled papers for the special election to succeed Rep. Gloria Negrete-McLeod in the state Senate.

Candidates have until the end of Friday to qualify for the March 12 ballot.

Gilbert is a Democrat who would join three other members of her party who have already filed nomination papers. Ontario councilman Paul Vincent Avila, Assemblywoman Norma Torres and San Bernardino County Treasurer/Tax Collector Larry Walker have already filed.

A single Republican, Ontario Mayor Paul Leon, has pulled papers.

The March 12 special election will be a primary contest. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the top two finishers will go head to head in a second election that would take place on May 14.
