MALIBU - A shooting in an unlikely place has left some Malibu residents worried about their safety.
Patrick Leach, 27, is free on $1 million bail in a Jan. 9 shooting that took place on West Winding Way, which is just north of Pacific Coast Highway near Ramirez Canyon Road.
The victim, identified by news outlets as 49-year-old Eric Shanks, was shot in the chest with a .45-caliber pistol
Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Leach, who was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, got in a dispute with a neighbor and shot him, but declined to elaborate on a motive.
Leach "bonded out pretty quickly," he said.
Deputies responding to a report of the shooting stopped a SUV leaving the scene and arrested Leach.
Leach is the son of the co-creator of the PBS show "Barney and Friends," Sheryl Leach, a former school teacher in Texas. Whitmore said he did not know what Leach did for a living, but that he apparently owns a home on West Winding Way and does not live with his mother.
Shanks was initially reported in critical condition. Whitmore said he was expected to live.
A Winding Way neighbor told ABC7 he used his hands to plug the hole the bullet left in Shanks' chest to keep him from bleeding to death. At least one neighbor told the station that Leach should be locked up.
Leach is due in court on Feb. 7, Channel 7 reported. Other news outlets reported that the dispute was over trespassing.
