ONTARIO - An Ontario-Montclair School District board member has requested that the district reconsider renaming a local preschool in honor of a prominent businessman.

Board member Steve Garcia, serving in just his second meeting since being elected in November, requested that district rename the Linda Vista Preschool to the Alex Espinoza Family Center.

Garcia said he initially introduced the motion before he left the school board in 2010, "for some reason it fell through and it wasn't support."

The board member made the request at the Jan. 17 meeting. Garica asked that it be placed on the agenda of the next meeting so that it can be discussed and a decision can be made in public.

"I think the Alex Espinoza Family Center is very timely. He is a very committed person in our community, Garcia said.

An Ontario resident, Espinoza owns a real estate company and has backed community events such Esperanza Scholarship Foundation and the Ontario Leadership Alliance.

In addition to Garcia's request, board member Maureen Mendoza requested that the superintendent and his cabinet look the process adopted by other school districts to rename buildings.

"Usually they leave it up to the community so that it is transparent," she said. "We should take into consideration the community."

The next regular board meeting is Feb. 7 at 7 p.m.
