LOS ANGELES - A big rig driver was critically injured Monday night in a three-vehicle collision on the transition road from the westbound Santa Monica (10) Freeway to the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway near downtown Los Angeles.

The collision was reported at 7:08 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters cut the driver from the wreckage and took him to a hospital, according to broadcast reports.

The big rig ended up on its side and its load of metal pipes were strewn across all lanes, according to the CHP, which reported that the transition road remained closed more than four hours after the crash.
