RIALTO -- It's been a tough start to 2013 for the Rialto Unified School District.
The Rialto Unified school board meets tonight for the first time since audio of a third grade teacher berating his students has drawn national attention and only days after the shooting of Eisenhower High school basketball coach Steve Johnson at a San Bernardino park.
Veteran Henry Elementary teacher Timothy Braby was secretly recorded by the grandmother of one of his students. On the recording, which was later shared with the media, Braby is heard calling students unintelligent and asking if students are giving him attitude when they are failing to indent paragraphs directly.
Braby was placed on paid administrative leave on Thursday, pending the results of an investigation into his conduct in the classroom.
Johnson was shot several times in his upper torso Monday night at a Seccombe Lake Park bathroom in San Bernardino. The award-winning coach told police he was approached by three unidentified black men who demanded his wallet. He remained in a Loma Linda Hospital Tuesday night.
The Rialto Unified board is scheduled to meet tonight at 7 p.m. at the Dr. John R. Kazalunas Education Center, 182 East Walnut Ave., Rialto. (Closed session begins at 5:30.)
