LAMONT, Calif.—Kern County sheriff's deputies searched and cleared a Lamont elementary school after students reported seeing a man with a gun climbing over the school fence.

Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt said deputies responded Wednesday afternoon to Lamont Elementary School, 15 miles southeast of Bakersfield, but did not find a gunman on campus.

Pruitt said three second graders reported seeing a male attempting to climb the school fence from an adjacent park. Two of the students said the man was in possession of a handgun.

At about 1:20 p.m., the school was locked down and deputies searched the classrooms and grounds. They did not locate a suspect.

Pruitt said the school lockdown has been lifted and students have been released to their parents.
