RIVERSIDE, Calif.—A Riverside County school district is being fined $1.8 million for inflating student enrollment on applications for state school construction money.

The Riverside County Press-Enterprise ( http://bit.ly/Um9Me0) says Alvord Unified School District will pay under a deal approved Wednesday by the State Allocation Board.

California officials originally recommended more than $18 million in fines.

Officials say that for eight years, the district double-reported enrollment in some classes for special-needs students.

The district says it was due to a clerical error.
